The latest scams and advice on how to protect yourself against scammers.
Looking for tickets to a big show that is all sold out, such as when Taylor Swift came to Melbourne and Sydney? See an offer for tickets online? Be very careful! Scammers are using real-looking profiles to get you into paying large sums of money for tickets that do not exist.
Looking to buy from an online marketplace? Scammers use online marketplaces in a number of ways to steal your money. If you are buying something, it is wise to inspect the goods in person before you pay. When selling, don't give or send the item before you have been paid.
You haven't paid your toll. We couldn't deliver your package. You have an outstanding debt. We all receive these scams by SMS. If your phone does not automatically mark these as spam, simply delete the message and do not click on the link. It is also good to use the option in Android and iOS to block and report the number. Your phone will then automatically filter out any future SMS from these numbers.
Looking for love online? You may get a match with a wonderful person, but there are also people out there who are only after your money. They will message you a lot, build trust and make you feel special before they bring up money. Money they urgently need, a great investment opportunity or buying cryptocurrency. You may even make some money back first.... until the love and money are gone.
"We have got a great deal for you!" Scammers, pretending to be from the NBN, are calling and walking around with offers for internet at a really cheap price. They even give a real NBN contact number, and the details of the technician who will come to install it. It is convincing enough to give your card details, which is then used to plunder your account. Protect yourself: hang up on the scammers and don't give your card details!
